Merz B. Schwanen – German Heritage Basics Since 1911
Loop-wheeled garments, premium Pima cotton, and timeless craftsmanship
In our opinion, Merz b. Schwanen make some of the best basics in the world. While many were first introduced to the brand through the iconic 215 loop-wheeled T-shirt worn by Carmy in The Bear, the story actually goes much deeper, back to 1911, with true German heritage at its core.
The brand was rediscovered by Gitta Plotnicki and Peter Plotnicki, who found a 90-year-old henley in remarkable condition at a Berlin flea market. Struck by its quality, they traced it back to the original Merz b. Schwanen factory and made the decision to bring the brand back to life.
Today, production has returned to that very same factory, one of only a handful of remaining loop-wheel factories in the world, where garments are still made with the same care and precision. From thoughtful details like breathable underarm panels and triangle inserts for ease of movement, to the use of premium Pima cotton, every piece reflects a quiet dedication to craftsmanship.
Merz’s understated approach is what really sets them apart. Their “Good Basics” line is anything but basic, a true example of how simplicity, done right, can be exceptional.
